How to Convert a Whole Recipe from Grams to Cups
To convert a recipe from grams to cups, divide each ingredient's grams by that ingredient's own grams-per-cup figure, then round the result to the nearest measure you actually own. There is no universal ratio: 120 g converts one cup of flour, 200 g one cup of sugar, 227 g one cup of butter.
The mechanics are one division per ingredient. The craft is in the rounding, the order you work in, and recognising the recipes where conversion costs more accuracy than it is worth. This guide covers all three, ending with a full worked example.
Step one: convert every ingredient with its own density
Work down the ingredient list one line at a time, using the right grams-per-cup figure for each. Our converter's recipe parser does the whole list at once if you paste it in, but knowing the anchor numbers makes you fast without any tool: flour 120, granulated sugar 200, packed brown sugar 220, butter 227, milk and water 240, honey 340.
Watch the ingredient descriptions while you work. Chopped almonds and whole almonds convert differently. Packed and loose brown sugar differ by 20 g a cup. If the recipe says 150 g sifted flour, the sifting already happened before the gram measurement, so convert with the sifted figure of about 110 g a cup.
Step two: round to measures that exist
A conversion that outputs 1.87 cups is mathematically right and practically useless, because no kitchen owns a 1.87 cup measure. Round to the nearest eighth of a cup, and below a quarter cup, switch to tablespoons: one tablespoon is a sixteenth of a cup, so 0.19 cups becomes three tablespoons.
Round with the recipe's tolerance in mind. Flour in bread can wander a few percent safely, so 1.87 cups of flour becomes a comfortable one and seven eighths. Leaveners and salt cannot wander: 6 g of baking powder should become one and a half teaspoons exactly, never a rounded quarter of anything.
Step three: sanity check the ratios
After converting, glance at the flour-to-fat and flour-to-liquid ratios in cup form. A standard cookie dough is roughly two cups of flour to one cup of butter; a cake batter usually carries close to one cup of liquid for every two cups of flour. If your converted numbers land wildly off these shapes, one division probably slipped.
This ten second check catches the classic mistake of converting an ingredient with the wrong density, like using the water figure for oil or the whole almond figure for almond flour.
A full worked example
Here is a metric chocolate chip cookie recipe converted with this system. Note how the salt refuses cups entirely and becomes a spoon measure:

The recipes you should leave in grams
Macarons, laminated pastry, high hydration bread and candy work were developed by weight because their tolerances are smaller than cup rounding error. Converting them produces a recipe that looks followable and fails intermittently, which is worse than one that admits it needs a scale.
The tell is precision in the original: a recipe listing 163 g of almond flour is telling you its tolerances. One listing 250 g of flour for a snack cake is happy to become two cups plus a tablespoon. Convert the second kind freely, and let the first kind talk you into a 15 dollar scale.
